Classic Storm Radio Ep 75 - Hosted by Che Broadway

DJ Toshi and Che Broadway are back with another episode of Classic Storm Radio on RadioHipHop.com and Chambermusik Radio.

This week, Toshi sets it off with a couple of Australians making waves… Producers DJ Butcher and Tommy Illfigga… collectively known as The Crate Creeps. Toshi spins the title track from their debut album, It’s About That Time, which features Rakaa of Dilated Peoples. From “down under,” Toshi moves into “parts unknown” for the enigmatic Matt Maddox with Homage (Rights Of Passage) featuring the legendary Sadat X. Speaking of legends, 16, 17, 18, is up next from Al Be Back featuring KRS-ONE and MC Lyte and it is EPIC!

Toshi transitions into the sounds of another legendary figure, DJ Premier and his production for Canibus on the track Golden Terra Of Rap from the forthcoming release, C Of Tranquility. In New York City, Capone-N-Noreaga have been making serious noise in the underground following their signing to Raekwon’s Ice Water Imprint and release of their highly anticipated album, The War Report 2, from which Toshi chooses The Oath featuring Raekwon and Busta Rhymes. CNN IS BACK!!!

After CNN’s The Oath, we demand that you Step Up, as commanded by Shabaam Sahdeeq, followed by Famoso and Bekay explaining the Dirty Fighter mentality. Now, DJ Toshi pulls out a Classic Storm EXCLUSIVE (Courtesy of Cee Da Cuban): My Story Is Yours featuring Amazing Maze, Lord Tariq and Wyldbunch. Click on the name of the song to check out the video!!

After Che Broadway chops it up about this weeks hip hop events in New York City, Toshi revs it back up with Lil Cease’s Hustle Remix featuring Capone-N-Noreaga and Imam Thug. Moving across the Atlantic, Toshi settles in Cologne, Germany with the rising production duo of JR and PH7 with Oddisee, All In A Days Work from their latest release The EP.

Okay… now let’s get down to brass tax: The “CLASSIC” in Classic Storm Radio is making another appearance. Toshi spins the table back 15 years to “The D” aka Detroit, circa 1995, when a group called 1st Down, consisting of a young producer by the name of Jay Dee (who would later be known as J Dilla, R.I.P.) and a rapper by the name of Phat Kat, signed with PayDay Records. For your listening pleasures, we have 1st Down’s Front Street. And while we’re on the subject of J Dilla, his former crew, Slum Village, recently released Scheming, featuring Dilla along side Posdnuos (Of De La Soul) and Phife Dawg (Of A Tribe Called Quest).

Finishing like Mariano Rivera, Toshi spins Nu World from El Da Sensei, Respect from Moke Out and Tone featuring Mr. Met and Crooked I, The Bridge from Canadian MC, Promise, Thunder In Paradise from the Brown Bag All-Stars, Soul Khan, Goldyn Chyld from master lyricist Ras Kass, You Don’t Know About It from M-Dot featuring Masta Ace… And finishes with Foolish from Moe Pope featuring our man Reks.

Classic Storm Radio - Episode 72 - Guest BurntMD

DJ Toshi’s Classic Storm Radio, Episode 72, features Canarsie Brooklyn Native, who transplanted to Vermont and made it a viable hip-hop scene, BurntMD. Loyal listeners of Classic Storm Radio are already familiar with BurntMD because DJ Toshi has been knocking his tracks for months! BurntMD was in NYC for a show with Keith Murray @ Brooklyn’s South Paw in Park Slope, which has become a favorite hip-hop shop for the flourishing underground.

DJ Toshi set’s the show off with BurntMD’s Microphone Doctor from the newly released Let’s Get Ill EP, which is available on iTunes. He keeps it Brooklyn by following with the legendary AZ and his new joint, Feel My Pain, produced by Frank Dukes. DJ Toshi continues his mix with Eternia featuring Termanology and Reef The Lost Cauze, Nick Javas with Not A Game then Necro’s Thugcore Cowboy.

After that, we slow it down to catch up BurntMD and talk about where he’s from, the origin of his name, the viable hip hop scene in Vermont and the impressive list of features he has already obtained. From there, DJ Toshi brings in my personal favorite from the Let’s Get Ill EP, Stand The Rain featuring Akrobatik. This track is INSANITY! Make sure you go check it out on iTunes!

DJ Toshi’s ear draws him next to everybody’s favorite Ivy League EmCee, Homeboy Sandman and his latest release, Yeah But I Can Rhyme Though. Following that with SP Double featuring Royce Da 5’9″, Kid Vishis, King Heem and Termanology. Toshi reaches back into BurntMD’s Let’s Get Ill EP and draws Stand Back featuring Krondon, Phil The Agony and Planet Asia out of the holster. When Stand Back fades, we get back to BurntMD and discuss his influences and future plans, then comes the freestyle session where BurntMD, staying true to his roots, goes off the head for TEN MINUTES!! ClasSICK!

DJ Toshi finishes with Game’s Slangin Rocks and the new Xzibit track, Phenom where the X GOES IN!!!

Classic Storm Radio Ep 69 - Hosted by Che Broadway

DJ Toshi’s Classic Storm Radio is back with another exhibition of that raw, pure, real hip hop. We set it off with DJ Premiers latest signee to his Year Round Records imprint, Houston’s Khaleel. The track is Rappin’ Exercise and features Panchi of NYGz. Toshi follows that exclusive with new joints from Chief Kamachi, and BURNTmd, then breaks out an exclusive from the legendary Bumpy Knuckles, Put The Beats On’m, a classically Bumpy title! A swift cut by Toshi’s hand and then Termanology joins Planet Asia on Inspectah Deck’s Serious Rappin from The Manifesto album, which is crazy!

The enigmatic Jay Electronica, whose Exhibit C is pounding the streets like hip hop police cruisers, delivers A Million In The Morning. His charismatic flow and witty lyrical schemes has raised the eyebrows of hope with the underground hip hop community. As much as the return of Cypress Hill. The legendary west coast trio is back, courtesy of Priority Records’ new Creative Director (Snoop Dogg), with Rise Up. Toshi chose the Pete Rock produced Light It Up for your ears to ingest. Next, Raekwon jumps on The Reserves with the latest signees to his IceH20 imprint, Capone & Noreaga (CNN).

Toshi forges on with Truck North’s collaboration with group The 3rd, from their Reconstruction Mixtape, Shabaam Sahdeeq & Thorotracks, Diamond District then TruthLiVE & Buckwild, Toshi continues to feature that exclusive, largely unavailable music like the reunification of ONYX and their new track, Mad Energy. The unwavering Necro comes with asBESTos, Hell Razah features St. Peter, The Madd Rapper returns with Raekwon & Carl ThomasRZA’s younger brother and founding member of Killarmy, 9th Prince, makes an appearance with Young Godz featuring Shyheim, from his Revenge Of The 9th Prince LP available NOW! And there aren’t many better ways to end a universal hip hop themed radio show than with the Houston Icon himself, Scarface. This track, Dopeman, is believed to be from his much-anticipated album, The Habit.

Classic Storm Radio - Ep 68 - A Tribute To Guru (R.I.P.)

On Monday, April 19th, 2010, Hip Hop lost one of it’s most recognizable voices and beloved EmCees, The Guru. He rose to fame as the voice of iconic group Gang Starr, one of the cornerstone groups of Hip Hop’s golden era. In 1989, Gang Starr released their first album, No More Mr. Nice Guy, with the lead single, Manifest. Although their debut was overshadowed by some of the other albums released that year, their follow-up, Step In The Arena, could not be overlooked. The lead single, Just To Get A Rep, solidified the groups position in the game by combining street reality with signature production and flows. The group bathed in the shine that Step In The Arena provided, but didn’t stop or slow… and they came back with 1992’s Daily Operation. As well as featuring one of the most iconic tracks in the history of Hip Hop (B Side of the Take It Personal single), D.W.Y.C.K. with Nice & Smooth, Daily Operation served as the global introduction to The Gang Starr Foundation.

Gang Starr proved to be one of the greatest groups of all time by releasing classic album after classic album, which is practically unheralded in any genre of music. After Daily Operation came Hard To Earn, Moment Of Truth and The Ownerz. For the past 7 years the hip hop community has been wanting, if not expecting, that Guru and DJ Premier would link back up for another Gang Starr album… but it never materialized.

We, here at Classic Storm Radio and RadioHipHop.com, will not have any words for the situation that has arisen following Guru’s death…. We will only say that we love Gang Starr. We Love Guru. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten by us or the global Hip Hop community. We will continue to play his music, whether with DJ Premier as Gang Starr or one of his many features or the great Jazzmatazz projects that have fused Hip Hop with Jazz, once again.

For this special show, we invited 2 artists who knew Guru, ran with Gang Starr and recorded at the famed D&D Studios (Which Premier purchased in 2003 and renamed it HeadQCourterz), Squala Orphan and Absaloot. We chopped it up with them about how they linked with the legendary group and the amazing journeys and experiences they had as a part of the famed Gang Starr Foundation.

Rest In Peace Keith Elam aka Keithy E aka The Guru. Our respect for you is intrinsic.
